Wasp nest, American dollars, red and orange cotton thread, matches, and dried bay leaves.
Which issues are cherry-picked, which victims matter, what violence/ ignorance is justified, and how profit is key crash together in this rage-filled piece.
80% of the Palestinian deaths are civilians. There are innumerable dead kids in Gaza, children with their limbs blown off, and uninjured kids slowly dying from hunger and neglect because their parents died in front of them… All funded by the US!
I used wasp nest, thread, and burning as they are ingredients I might include in baneful magick. Money and bay leaves are typically associated with prosperity spells. The money funneling into the wasp nest, the matches yet to be lit, as well as the evidence of fire spreading over the surface is fitting for the current relationship between America and the genocide in Gaza. The cotton is a callback to previous genocides in US History. The thread nestles deep in the holes almost like worms breaking the surface for a moment indicating something working deeper in.

My therapist suggested breaking pencils as a healthy expression of anger. This piece is the pencils accumulated in August.
Asking The Same Question
2025
7" x 4" x 2.75"
Matches, plastic package from erasers, glue, thread, and wax paper.
The matches are from my witchcraft practice through the year, focused on the same topic. I just kept ruminating on the same topic, again and again, I returned to the same question. As the pile of matches on my alter grew, it felt like a perfect visual representation of rumination and how processing something often takes longer than we wish.
I assembled the matches on top of a plastic package. I wanted a second representation of returning to a thought again and again. So, I hand sewed over two hundred threads into a stack of wax paper. and attached it as the base of the piece.
This work displays on the wall via a holder that allows the piece to hover. This means the strings can hang loose and are affected by the environment.
